Introduction:
When we sit with someone who is hurting, confused, or entangled in sin, we are stepping into sacred territory. Biblical counseling is not simply about solving problems or offering advice— it is about helping people see God rightly, trust Him deeply, and walk in His ways faithfully. At the center of this process is not a method, a formula, or even the counselor. It is God Himself.
Far too often, people—even those in the church—approach life’s struggles with a view of God that is too small, too distant, or altogether misplaced. When the storms of life come, our hearts will naturally grab hold of whatever seems steady. If we have a shallow understanding of who God is, we will reach for lesser comforts that cannot sustain us. But when we see the God of the Bible— sovereign, wise, good, holy, loving, and merciful—we find a refuge strong enough for every trial.
The Purpose of This Book
This book is written to bring God’s attributes and character to the forefront of the counseling process. His character is not just theological truth to be studied—it is the bedrock upon which lives are rebuilt. Whether we are dealing with anxiety, anger, grief, addiction, or relational conflict, lasting hope is found when we anchor the soul in the unchanging nature of God.
A Conversation That Changed My Life
Back in 2004, while I was a member of Parkside Church in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, I had a conversation that changed the course of my life. A woman named Oraletta, who worked in the bookstore’s café, shared with me how she had struggled with what it meant to be a biblical wife. She had endured abuse in previous relationships and had become what she called a “very independent” woman—someone with no patience for men who tried to lord over her. Our conversations continued, and one day she told me, “Charles, you should get involved in Biblical Counseling. You would be a good fit for our Iron Sharpens Iron ministry.”
A couple of weeks later, I received a call from Pastor Ron Klein inviting me to consider formal training in biblical counseling and to join the ministry team. That conversation marked the beginning of a journey that would shape my life and my calling to help others find hope through the truth of God’s Word.
Discovering a Calling
After that conversation and the invitation from Pastor Ron Klein, I reached out to Joe Propri and began attending courses at The Biblical Counseling Institute in Garrettsville, Ohio. Over the next several months, I dedicated myself to the training—taking both the foundational and advanced courses—to learn all I could in order to help others faithfully.
What I quickly discovered, however, was that this journey wasn’t just about acquiring knowledge or skills. The truths I was learning were changing me deeply. God’s attributes, His steadfast character, and His gospel-centered counsel were reshaping my own heart even as I prepared to walk alongside others.
Walking Alongside Others
Since 2005, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside people in their deepest struggles, both as a counselor and as a fellow traveler in need of God’s grace. The experience has confirmed for me that
biblical counseling is not about quick fixes but about pointing to the unchanging God who sustains and transforms.
What to Expect in This Book
In the pages ahead, I will walk you through a biblical counseling approach that begins and ends with God. We will explore His attributes and consider how each one uniquely shapes how we counsel and how we live. Along the way, I will share real counseling experiences, including times when I myself needed to be counseled by these very truths. The goal is not to showcase a system but to exalt a Savior.
This is not a manual for professional counselors. It is for pastors, parents, friends, church members— anyone who wants to walk alongside others with Scripture open and hearts pointed toward Christ. The Bible is sufficient for these conversations, and the Holy Spirit is present in these moments. We are simply called to be faithful.
My hope is that this book will strengthen your confidence—not in yourself, but in the God who never changes.
May we become counselors who not only speak of Him but deeply trust Him.
Let’s begin where all true counsel must begin—with God.
